Calling October the month of so much going on is an understatement!
In early November, our friends in Mexico celebrate Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. This two-day festival honors family members who have passed on. Altars are decorated with yellow marigolds and photos of loved ones, and families bring food to the cemeteries to celebrate both life and death.
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and not just for the children. Those beautiful colored leaves offer so much to do; play in them, collect them, press them between sheets of wax paper, or even dress up as one! And favorite costumes like superheroes and witches (Glinda, anyone?) are still a hit.
I have a friend who is, of course, a little “kooky.” When her son was little, she told him that fairies came out in the fall and painted the trees in all their beautiful colors. She’s Irish, which might explain it, but I always thought it was a lovely image for a young, impressionable boy. And if you live somewhere with gorgeous fall foliage, it really is magical. Now I know there are some scientific explanations about why this happens, but I prefer connecting with DP’s and celebrations.
Speaking of celebrations, besides Días de los Muertos, there are many on this holiday, also known as ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, where it is said there is a thin veil between this world and the spirit world.
In the Irish festival of Samhain, its roots go back to “mumming”, or wearing costumes, going door to door, and singing songs to honor the dead, with cakes given as payment. Trick-or-treating is thought to have evolved from ancient Irish and Scottish customs practiced on the nights leading up to Samhain. Halloween pranks, though, in the ancient festival, tricks and mischief were usually blamed on fairies.
Whew, and there’s a lot happening in the sky, too. We entered the sign of Libra on September 22nd, and the season is now in full bloom. For all you Librans, note that Saturn is in Aries, which squares Libra. I personally would check in with your Astrologer or whoever you consult with, since it will be there until April of 2028. I’m sure some of you folks out there already know, just saying!
So, everyone, it’s time to gather pumpkins for your steps and ledges, carve them with the kids, eat pumpkin pie (before Thanksgiving!), and dress as a pumpkin, a witch, or anything fun. On Halloween, you can be anything you want to be. How wonderful is that!!!
I’ve always believed October is the beginning of all the holidays to come!
